Professor Shichida is a pioneer in the development and success of accelerated learning know by many as the Shichida Method. He is a well-known figure in Japan with more than 40 years of practice in developing and implementing unique teaching methods that stimulate the inborn genius in young children.
Since developing the Shichida method, he has founded over 400 Child Academies in Japan and written more than 100 books in Japanese, some of which remains on the bestsellers list in Japan. Four of his books have been translated into English.
He is a fellow of the International Academy of Education and advisor to the Japan Mathematical Certification Association. He holds a doctorate in education and has been recognized for his numerous contributions to brain research and learning achievements. He was awarded the highest Honorable Merit Prize by the World Science Council in 1997 and the World Peace Prize in 1998. In 2003, he received the Swedish Academy for Health and Medical Sciences Grand Prize and the Higashiku Ninomiya Invention Award. In 2004, he was honored with another PhD in Psychology for his contribution to child development.
His right brain left brain training institute emphasizes the importance of parent-child bonding and how this will impact the quality of brain stimulation. He feels that all children are born with unique innate abilities, which are easy to develop with proper training and parental guidance.
High-Speed, High-Capacity Memory
Writing about the Shichida method in one of his books, he says the right brain has a "high-speed, high-capacity memory" mechanism. The left brain turns data from the external world into language. This requires "sequential processing," wherein data is processed one bit at a time. This is a time-consuming activity. The right brain processes information very quickly as images. The left brain and right brain also differ in memory capacity and the period of time information can be stored. According to Shichida, the left brain is continuously dumping old information to make room for new. The right brain memory is never deleted. He says therefore, "photographic memory" is a right brain function. We can look at the left brain like computer RAM and the right brain as an unlimited capacity hard drive that can't be erased.
He says that from ages 0-3, the right brain is dominant. During this time period it's important to provide whatever the baby needs to stimulate his or her five senses regularly. Your child has, what Dr. Maria Montessori coined, "the absorbent mind" where they soak in all that's around them. He believes when "the right brain is developed well together with the left brain, the heart will be raised to a high level of potential. That is when a child is able to exceed our expectations and show his or her strengths. As a parent, please believe in this possibility - the potential your child carries, by loving him or her, and nurturing them well."
He continues, "These children are tapping powers we never knew existed as if they are perfectly normal. Watching them rapidly memorize enormous amounts of information and recall with precision and understanding, predict future events, improve their athletic ability instantaneously [all] serve as a guide for education that will revolutionize conventional approaches to child raising in the 21st Century."
"Babies Are Geniuses"
In his book, "Babies are Geniuses", Shichida says that another name for the right brain is the "image brain." It is this part of the brain by which we 'see' when we are visualizing, imagining or dreaming. Furthermore, the right brain mind can actually create mental images from the information stored in the cells of the body, which serves is the basis for extra sensory perception.
Having a photographic memory allows immediate access to information stored in the memory. The person with a photographic memory can recall any information from any book he has read or page he has seen. Each page can be viewed on the screen of his mind as if it were a snapshot.
Because the right and left brain hemispheres function as opposites they also compliment each other. The left brain is conscious and logical, takes in information slowly and likes repetition. The right brain is subconscious, intuitive and takes in information quickly.
Presenting information slowly and repetitively exercises the left brain, while flashing information to a child quickly stimulates and activates the right brain function.
Research shows that young children benefit from being shown flashcards such as phonograms, word cards and math dot cards if sessions are happy, relaxed and brief, and cards are presented quickly. Material can always be new and interesting with different pictures, words, facts or problems.
