Auditory Stimulation Enhances Your Child’s Brain Functions

According to experts, some types of auditory stimulation can have a beneficial impact on learning while other types can have a destructive influence. I’ll discuss both types in this article.

Auditory Stimulation with Some Classical Music Can Help Children Study

auditory stimulation sheet musicResearch shows that Baroque (Largo tempo) is the best music to play while engaging in study or training because its beats per minute (BPM) is the same as the alpha brain wave state. The alpha state is the most receptive, alert state of mind we can be in, which is ideal for learning. Other classical music, such as the waltz, reportedly have a BPM that is in harmony the natural rhythm of our body. The waltz helps raise our energies and consciousness upward, which can have a positive impact when studying.

This type of auditory stimulation is recommended for your learning environment. However, not all classical music is beneficial for study. Vocals, choirs and those with instrumentals that stand out can be distracting. Generally, arrangements using only stringed instruments are your best choice.

Auditory Stimulation with Syncopated Beats Block Learning

Music that carries a syncopated beat (such as rock music) is detrimental for study. Experiments show the this type of music can actually rewire the brain toward more violent and destructive behaviors. In a controlled experiment with mice, one alarmed physicist found that all the mice he exposed to syncopated voodoo drum beats had developed permanent brain damage and actually killed themselves.

“Smart Music” Doesn’t Make You Smart

The information you may have heard about classical music making you smarter is an incomplete assessment. Classical music can help move the brain into a state where we can concentrate better and retain more, but music in and of itself does not make us smart. In addition, if other negative factors are present in our environment such as yelling, TV noise, bad smells, etc., even the right types of auditory stimulation may not help us become focused enough for effective study.

Meditating with Music Can Help Children Study

The classical mentioned above is great to use during meditation. Meditation is an excellent way to move the mind into the alpha state.

Sounds of Nature Stimulate the Mind in Positive Ways

Other effective stimuli are the sounds of nature, like ocean waves crashing on a shore or birds singing in a forest. These are good examples of natural auditory stimulation that can help the mind enter the relaxed state of mind needed for effective intake and retention of information. We have great CDs that use a combination of sounds of the ocean accompanied by the music of great classical composers.

Positive Affirmations Help Children Become Positive Thinkers

auditory stimulationPositive affirmations are a great way to change our attitude and improve self esteem. They make a good adjunct to learning, especially for children. The definition of “affirmation” is: The declaration that something is true. The power of positive affirmations can be witnessed in the children who daily sing along with the 28 popular songs we carry on this site. These songs use uplifting positive affirmations that children (and children at heart) love listening and singing to. Look for Anne Infante’s Positive Affirmation Songs in our Products section.

Auditory Stimulation for Your Baby

Enhancing your baby’s auditory synapse activity is simple. One way is to announce the sounds both of you and your baby are hearing as you both go about your day together. When you start your car, say, “Do you hear that? It’s our car starting.” Sit at your piano with your baby and say, “This is a piano playing.” and start playing. When in the bathroom and you turn on the faucet, say, “Your hearing a faucet with running water.” You close doors, right? Just say, “This is a door closing.” It’s that simple!

If you really want to accelerate you baby’s auditory brain functions, do a web search for “sounds”, “animal sounds”, “nature sounds”, etc. and play those to your baby. There are many sites that have sound effects you can download free or buy. When one mother found out about this tip, she wrote saying, “We collected hundreds of sounds for our little girl. We just site with our mp3 player, baby in arms, and announce what sound she is going to hear next and then play it. She loves every minute!”

Be creative and have fun giving your baby the right auditory stimulation for whole brain development!
